What are the small crystals in my butter and cod liver oil mixture?

The crystals are harmless – they form when the oil is warmed to room temperature and then slowly cools down to below 5°C (e.g. during transport).

To dissolve the crystals again, you can warm the oil to room temperature, possibly in a water bath, until it liquefies. Then place it in the refrigerator, and by the next intake, there should be no more crystals present.

What is the shelf life after opening?

The gel has the same shelf life after opening as it has when orginally closed.

Should I choose the butter and cod liver oil mixture or the pure cod liver oil?

It really depends on your goals. 

The mixture is a blend that combines fermented cod liver oil (fat-soluble vitamins A & D, EPA/DHA) with concentrated butter oil rich in vitamin K2 (MK-4) and additional short-chain fatty acids. 

The pure cod liver oil contains only the fish-derived nutrients: vitamin A and omega-3s (EPA/DHA).

The mixture provides more nutrients because it also provides the nutrients from the butter oil. If your focus is purely on omega-3s and vitamin A, you should go with the pure cod liver oil. If you also want vitamin K2 (MK-4), then go with the mixture (or get the butter oil separately).
