What is the difference between collagen and gelatin?

Collagen is a structural protein found in connective tissues, skin, bones, and cartilage. It provides strength and elasticity to these tissues. It dissolves in liquid and does not form a gel-like consistency.

Gelatin is a form of collagen. It is created by boiling collagen-rich animal parts. This breaks down the collagen into smaller peptides. Gelatin dissolves in hot water and forms a gel-like consistency when cooled.

Where does the collagen come from?

Great Lakes Gelatin’s collagen and gelatin products are sourced from cattle in Argentina and Brazil. They are pasture-raised and grass-fed based on the standards of the American Grassfed Association and animal welfare guidelines. Being forage based eliminates the potential use of growth hormones, antibiotics, and steroids, which follows the Food and Agricultural Legislation in Argentina and Brazil.

Who is Great Lakes?

Great Lakes have been helping people live healthier lives by providing top quality collagen-based health products for almost 100 years. Great Lakes Wellness pioneered the ‘original’ Collagen Hydrolysate. Great Lakes is still a family-run business.

Great Lakes began in 1922 as Grayslake Gelatin. From the beginning, the goal was to supply the highest quality gelatin to both the commercial and consumer markets. In 1988, Grayslake Gelatin became Great Lakes Wellness Company as demand for their products continued to grow. Originally used as a functional ingredient in products such as gelatin desserts and vitamin capsules, their pure collagen protein gelatin soon became an important supplement to health conscious people around the globe.
